SiPort Applications :: HD Digital Radio
HD Radio™ is most significant development in radio broadcasting since the advent of FM Stereo fifty years ago. HD Radio™ is a free over-the-air digital broadcast from FM and AM radio stations in conjunction with their analog signals. HD Radio™ enables AM and FM radio stations to simulcast both digital and analog audio within the same channel as well as add new FM channels and data services. HD FM stations subdivide their data stream into sub-channels -HD1, -HD2, -HD3 etc. providing exciting new audio channels with terrific new content into existing markets. Consumers enjoy new channels and additional content on their existing radio dial with HD Radio™.
As of December, 2008 there are 1819 radio stations on the air in the United States of America covering all 50 states and serving a population of 245 million (84% of the US population) broadcasting HD content. 195 of the top 200 markets in the US are served by these HD Radio™ broadcasts with 934 of the 1819 radio stations broadcasting in HD2 and HD3. For example, FM 95.5 in Los Angeles, CA broadcasts 95.5-HD1 (Rock), 95.5-HD2 (Fusion) and 95.5-HD3 (KABC-AM 790) thus providing the consumer with greater choices in new, free audio content.
HD Radio™ provides the consumer the conveniences lacking with analog radio broadcasts. HD Radio™ boasts functionality such as:
- Searchable content (by genre)
- Radio TIVO functionality (Pause, Rewind, Play functionality)
- Actionable content
- If you like the song you are listening to, you can mark the song by “tagging” the song and purchasing the song on-line at a later time
HD Radio™ is actively supported by all of the major broadcasters in the US such as Clearchannel, CBS Radio, ABC, Emmis, Entercom, Bonneville etc. Currently there are over 60 different broadcast formats in HD Radio™ thus providing satellite radio like content without a subscription fee.
